The Palace of the Governors' Portal Program
October 25, 2007
One of the places people remember most of their visit to Santa Fe is the Palace of The Governors in the Plaza. Along the south side of the Palace of The Governors, visitors can walk the portal where Native American artists and craftspeople sit and sell their wares to tourists and local Santa Feans. Vendors represent approximately forty-one tribes, pueblos, as well as chapters and villages in New Mexico, the Navajo Nation. Vendors who do participate in the Portal Program at The Palace of The Governors are overseen by the Vendors Committee. The committee creates and enforces participation rules for all the artists who represent their work under the portal. The rules in place accentuate authenticity, traditional materials, and handmade work. A maker's mark is required and can be found on every piece sold at The Palace. It is not an inexpensive place to purchase from artists but the workmanship on display here is of the highest quality and not mass produced. Vendors are there rain or shine, cold or hot!
