The Festival of the Cranes
October 30, 2007
There are numerous events to partake in as winter rolls around and for nature and bird watchers this event is a must for your activities list. Every winter season, thousands of Sandhill Cranes migrate to the Bosque del Apache, just south of Socorro, about two hours from Santa Fe.
For about 18 years now, the city of Socorro, along with the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge began celebrating the migration and return of the cranes with a festival. In addition to the sandhill cranes, the refuge is also a wintering stopover or home for snow geese, Ross' geese, pintails, shovelers, mallards, and a host of other waterfowl.
Each year now in along with bird watching, guests to the Bosque can welcomed with exhibits, demonstrations, lectures and tours to familiarize you to areas and topics not available during the rest of the year. Registration is required and times and locations vary.
The Bosque del Apache is open every day of the year from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. The visitors' center is open year round (except major holidays), 7:30 am-4 pm Monday-Friday and 8 am-4:30 pm Saturday and Sunday. The refuge encompasses 57,191 breathtaking acres along the Rio Grande.
Currently more than 340 species of birds as well as coyotes, mule deer, elk and many other types of wildlife find their home within these acres.
The Festival of the Cranes is being held November 13-18th. For more information on this spectacular event and for registration forms for lectures and demonstrations visit The Festival of Cranes.
